The Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS) has released the monthly inflation report for October 2018 Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY), providing updated insights into the nation’s price movements across key sectors.
Addis Ababa, November 2025 — Ethiopia’s year-on-year general inflation rate stood at 11.7 percent in October 2018 E.C (2025 G.C), showing a significant moderation compared to 19.3 percent recorded in the same month a year earlier.
The month-on-month inflation rate rose by 2.3 percent in October 2018 E.C, compared with 3.6 percent during the corresponding period of the previous year, reflecting a more measured pace of price increases across the economy.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks changes in the cost of goods and services, is composed of two main divisions—Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Non-Food Components—covering 21 major expenditure groups.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages experienced a year-on-year inflation rate of 10.2%. Key contributors to this increase include vegetables (11.1%), meat (13.6%), sugar, jam, honey & chocolate (20.2%), milk, cheese, and eggs (12.4%), oils and fats (14.3%), and fruit (15.2%). Conversely, bread and cereals saw a decrease of 4.4%.
Non-food inflation rose by 14.2 percent, driven by increases in alcoholic beverages and tobacco (14.6%), housing, water, electricity & other fuel (12.4%), furnishings and household equipment (14.1%), transport (27.0%), communication (11.5%), education (9.3%), restaurants and hotels (13.0%), and miscellaneous goods and services (22.3%). The health sector experienced a more moderate increase of 1.5%.
The October 2018 E.C inflation data suggests a continued slowdown in the general inflation trend, particularly compared to the higher levels observed in recent years. The moderation in inflation highlights the effects of stable market conditions and policy efforts aimed at curbing price pressures, though certain sectors such as transport and food remain sensitive to domestic and external factors.
