Inflation in Ethiopia

Inflation in Ethiopia continues to ease as food prices rise more slowly

Ethiopia’s year-on-year inflation reached 13.2 percent in September EFY 2018, down from 13.6 percent in August EFY 2018 and 17.5 percent in September EFY 2017. Food inflation eased to 12.1 percent, as staple prices such as bread and cereals declined slightly. At the same time, housing and transport costs continued to rise.

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) from the Ethiopian Statistics Service confirms that overall inflation continues to ease compared to last year. Although prices remain elevated, the rate of increase has moderated in several key spending categories.

Food prices rising more slowly

Food, which accounts for 53.5 percent of Ethiopia’s CPI basket, registered a year-on-year increase of 12.1 percent in September, compared with a 12.7 percent rise in August. Within this category, bread and cereals — making up 17.1 percent of the national basket — fell by 2.0 percent compared to the previous month. Vegetable prices rose by 15.3 percent, while meat increased by 16.1 percent.

Housing and transport prices continue to increase

Housing-related expenses, including rent, electricity, water, and gas, rose by 12.9 percent compared with the same month last year. With a 16.8 percent share in the CPI basket, housing remains the most significant non-food expenditure for households.

Transport costs increased sharply, by 40.3 percent year-on-year, possibly due to reduced fuel subsidies and higher international oil prices. This development partially offsets gains made from slower food inflation and keeps pressure on household budgets.

Monthly developments

From August to September EFY 2018, the general inflation rate increased by 2.0 percent. Key monthly changes included a 1.1 percent rise in bread and cereals, 4.2 percent in meat, and 2.7 percent in housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels.
