Population and Housing Census
The Population and Housing Census is the largest statistical operation conducted by the Ethiopian Statistics Service (ESS). It provides the most comprehensive picture of Ethiopia’s population, households, and housing conditions. Ethiopia has conducted three national censuses: 1984, 1994, and 2007.
As the latest census becomes older, population projections provide updated estimates of the population by age, sex, and location. Together, census data and population projections support planning, policymaking, and the production of official statistics. The census covers two main areas:
Population Characteristics include demographic information, education, employment, fertility, mortality, migration, and disability.
Housing Characteristics cover housing quality, tenure, access to water, sanitation, energy, household amenities, room density, and ownership of communication devices.
