Code of Practice for Official Statistics in Ethiopia

Official statistics are an essential public asset. They provide an information and evidence
on society, the economy and on the work and performance of government. They are
fundamental to the judgments and decisions made by the public, by government and by
several range of other organizations. Official statistical activity is a public duty regulated
by law that serves general information purposes, provides social orientation, and supports
evidence-based decision-making through the dissemination of statistical data.

The Code of Practice for Official Statistics (CPOS) plays an essential role in ensuring data and
statistics produced, managed, and disseminated by government at all levels command
public trust and confidence through demonstrating trustworthiness and providing high
quality data and statistics that maximize public value. The Code sets clarity on the legal
and institutional framework, and the roles and working relationships between government
organ structure in relation to statistical regulatory and operational statistical functions.
