Vital Statistics Department
Introduction
The Vital Statistics department is a core division of the Ethiopian Statistics Service (ESS), legally mandated to compile and disseminate national vital statistics. The office was created following the 2012 formalization of Ethiopia’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system (Statistics Law No. 442/2005 and Proclamation No. 760/2012). Its primary function is to transform administrative civil registrations into high-quality, register-based statistical data.
Primary Objective
The objective of the Vital Statistics department is to systematically compile, process, analyze, and disseminate register-based vital statistics. This data serves as a critical evidence base for planning, resource allocation, and policy formulation.
Operational Structure
The department executes its functions through a specialized internal structure, supported by a network of 26 regional branch offices that facilitate decentralized data processing. The department is organized into three technical units:
- Birth and Death Statistics Unit
- Marriage and Divorce Statistics Unit
- Data Processing Unit
