The Vital Statistics department is a core division of the Ethiopian Statistics Service (ESS), legally mandated to compile and disseminate national vital statistics.  The office was created following the 2012 formalization of Ethiopia’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system (Statistics Law No. 442/2005 and Proclamation No. 760/2012). Its primary function is to transform administrative civil registrations into high-quality, register-based statistical data.

The objective of the Vital Statistics department is to systematically compile, process, analyze, and disseminate register-based vital statistics. This data serves as a critical evidence base for planning, resource allocation, and policy formulation.
