Understanding Unemployment
Unemployment is a key indicator showing how much human potential remains unused within an economy. High unemployment levels demonstrate the extent of labour resources that remain untapped.
Economically, it results in lost productivity, reduced household income, and slower national growth. Socially, unemployment increases poverty, dependency, and vulnerability, especially among youth and women.
Why Accurate Data Matters
Reliable unemployment statistics support effective labour-market planning, helping policymakers identify priority groups and regional disparities.
ILO Definition of Unemployment
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO, 1983), a person is considered unemployed only if they meet all three criteria:
- Without work
- Available for work
- Actively seeking work
