The Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS) has released its official Monthly Inflation Report for November 2018 Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY), revealing that the country’s year-on-year general inflation rate stood at 10.9 percent, marking a notable decline from 16.9 percent recorded in the same month of November 2016 EFY.
The report further indicates that month-on-month general inflation registered a decrease of 1.4 percent in November 2018 EFY, compared to a 0.8 percent decline observed in November 2017 EFY. This continued downward movement reflects a gradual easing of overall price pressures within the national economy.
The year-on-year inflation rate for the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages component of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 10.6 percent in November 2018 EFY. This increase was mainly driven by significant price rises in vegetables (10.2%), meat (14.8%), sugar, jam, honey and chocolate (18.6%), milk, cheese and eggs (14.2%), oils and fats (18.9%), fruits (14.1%), and food products n.e.c (19.7%). However, prices of bread and cereals declined by 3.0 percent.
The non-food inflation rate increased by 11.4 percent in November 2018 EFY. Major contributors include alcoholic beverages and tobacco (16.7%), housing, water, electricity and other fuels (3.7%), furnishings and household equipment (13.9%), health (4.8%), transport (20.9%), communication (16.1%), education (8.0%), restaurants and hotels (13.0%), and miscellaneous goods and services (23.9%).
The continued decline in both annual and monthly inflation rates reflects improved stability in consumer prices across key sectors of the economy. ESS remains committed to providing accurate and timely inflation statistics to support economic planning and policy formulation.
