📊 Ethiopia’s Inflation Rate Declines to
9.8% in January 2018 EFY

The Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS) has released its official
Monthly Inflation Report for January 2018 Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY),
indicating a significant decline in inflation across the national economy.

🔻 Headline Inflation

  • Year-on-year general inflation:
    9.7%
    (Down from 16.9% in November 2017 EFY)
  • Month-on-month general inflation:
    –1.4%
    (Compared to a –0.8% decrease in November 2017 EFY)

🥗 Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages

Year-on-year inflation:
9.7%

  • Vegetables: 8.3%
  • Meat: 13.7%
  • Sugar, jam, honey & chocolate: 16.1%
  • Milk, cheese & eggs: 12.0%
  • Oils & fats: 11.7%
  • Fruits: 14.5%
  • Food products n.e.c: 15.7%
  • Bread & cereals: –3.0%

🏠 Non-Food Inflation

Overall non-food inflation:
11.4%

  • Alcoholic beverages & tobacco: 10.4%
  • Housing, water, electricity & fuels: 1.9%
  • Furnishings & household equipment: 12.5%
  • Health: 4.8%
  • Transport: 17.6%
  • Communication: 13.9%
  • Education: 7.1%
  • Restaurants & hotels: 13.8%
  • Miscellaneous goods & services: 21.9%

The continued decline in both annual and monthly
inflation rates reflects improved stability in consumer prices across key sectors
of the economy.
