The monthly Consumer price data collection first started in Addis Ababa in 1963.  Currently the Consumer price data collection is done at 200 representative urban markets throughout the country.  The Consumer price survey covers the collection of prices of major agricultural and industrial Consumption goods for 650 selected price items. The monthly survey covers all the 9 regions and 2 city administrations. Based on the Country’s development policies the price statistics team provides quality and timely prices of goods and services for universities and colleges, prison administrations, military and police camps and hospitals to be used as an input for their procurement and bidding needs.


The monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) and inflation rates which are used as key macroeconomic indicators are prepared and published monthly on timely basis and disseminated to national policy makers, other domestic stakeholders and international users.


The Rural agricultural products survey began in 1981 as part of the integrated household Survey program. The data collected from rural farm households and Agricultural products producer’s cooperatives. The producer price data consists of about 100 primary agricultural products. A monthly statistical report is prepared and disseminated to data users. Currently the survey is conducted at 526 rural enumeration areas.


The agricultural producer price index measures the change in revenue received by farmers. The agricultural producer price index and inflation is prepared and disseminated to domestic policy makers and international users.


The monthly common user items price survey is conducted in Addis Ababa and it is mainly used as input for the procurement and bidding process by Government Purchase Service and by Government Purchase and Procurement Authority along with other government agencies. The price statistics team collects the monthly Common user Price data and produces a statistical report and disseminates to concerned government agencies mentioned above.


The price statistics team prepares a monthly Harmonized Consumer Price Index (HCPI) and inflation for the planned objective of creating common currency and macroeconomic convergence for African countries and sends it to Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
