The department at the Ethiopian Statistics Service operates across several interconnected pillars to modernize the nation’s data ecosystem.

The department drives digital infrastructure upgrades by designing, installing, and maintaining the vital hardware, servers, data centers, and network frameworks. This continuous technological overhaul provides the foundation required to transition the entire institution away from legacy, paper-based workflows toward fully digital, real-time data collection.

For spatial and geographic planning, the department manages geospatial and GIS integration. The department collaborates directly with the GIS department to build advanced information systems that embed Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing data straight into national censuses, agricultural surveys, and demographic tracking.

The department is responsible for the architectural design, building, and securing of the massive relational databases that house Ethiopia’s critical socio-economic, agricultural, and population data, ensuring that strict access controls and data privacy safeguards are maintained.

The department supports active data collection and provides comprehensive field technology support to optimize and maintain the custom software and mobile frameworks utilized by field agents, such as Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) applications, which allow for rapid, offline-capable digital interviewing across diverse regions.

The final stage of the department’s mandate focuses on building data dissemination technologies in collaboration with the dissemination department. The department designs and maintains the public-facing portals, websites, and APIs that allow government policymakers, international development organizations, and independent researchers to easily download, analyze, and visualize official national statistics.
