The Ethiopian Statistics Service (ESS) today released the results of the Employment and Migration Statistics Survey, which is part of the National Integrated Household Survey that has been ongoing for the past year, beginning in September 2017 (E.C.).
Speaking at the data dissemination workshop, H.E. Dr. Beker Shale, Director General of the ESS, noted that among the key data development initiatives planned under the mid-term Statistical Development Plan (2016-2018 E.C.), the Demographic and Health Survey has already been completed and released to users, in addition to the monthly market price data. He stated that the employment and migration data being released today will play a key role in enabling the government to formulate, monitor, and support timely employment and migration policies and plans.
Dr. Beker expressed gratitude to the government for prioritizing statistical development and providing the necessary resources and logistics to achieve this level of success. He also thanked the Ministry of Planning and Development, the Ministry of Finance, various government sectors, regional and city administration bodies, professional associations, research institutes, universities, technical and vocational colleges, the International Labor Organization (ILO), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for their technical and financial support and cooperation.
Furthermore, he acknowledged all ESS professionals, from senior leadership to data collectors, for maintaining professional discipline and executing the work to a high standard to reach this point.
H.E. Mr. Bereket Fisehatsion, State Minister of Planning and Development, delivered the opening remarks at the data dissemination workshop. He stated that Ethiopia has formulated and implemented a three-year Statistical Development Strategy (2016-2018 E.C.) to ensure its statistical data sovereignty. He emphasized that the employment and migration data released today will serve as a primary input for formulating policies, strategies, and plans concerning employment and migration in the country for the coming years. He congratulated the senior leadership of the ESS, all staff, federal and regional government bodies, and other stakeholders for their diligence and cooperation in successfully completing the survey fieldwork and report preparation for dissemination to users.
Mr. Khumbula Ndaba, Director of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Country Office for Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan, stated that his organization will continue to support the efforts of the Ethiopian Statistics Service to provide timely and high-quality labor force employment data.
