Report on Ethiopia Socioeconomic Panel Survey 2021/22 (2014 E.C)

The Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS) and the World Bank released the Wave 5 Ethiopia Socioeconomic Panel Survey (ESPS-5) report, surveying 4,999 households across 438 enumeration areas to assess socioeconomic dynamics. Nationally, school enrollment held at 64%, self-reported illnesses reached 14%, and 74% of the population accessed improved drinking water sources. However, significant infrastructure gaps remain, with only 26% of the population utilizing improved sanitation facilities. Electricity access grew to 63% largely propelled by a surge in solar energy while total employment stood at 56%, showing a persistent gap between male (70%) and female (45%) employment rates.

Agriculture remains central to rural livelihoods, with 96% of rural households participating in crop or livestock farming. Households faced severe external pressures, primarily driven by unusual rises in food prices (reported by 28.5% of households) and agricultural input costs (21.6%). Nationally, the average annual household consumption expenditure per adult equivalent was 17,000 Birr.
