Report on Area, Production and Farm Management Practices Belg Season 2020/21 (2013 E.C)

 

The 2020/21 (2013 E.C.) Belg season, private peasant holdings across Ethiopia cultivated a total estimated cropland area of 2,124,387 hectares, generating an estimated production of 52,661,970.96 quintals across grain crops, vegetables, and root crops. Grain crops represented the lion's share of this production, covering 1,748,457.62 hectares and yielding 14,754,984.98 quintals. Within grains, cereals dominated by accounting for 1,335,905.95 hectares (76.40%) and 12,129,875.99 quintals (82.21%) of total grain output, followed by pulses at 401,362.65 hectares (22.96%) and 2,581,034.58 quintals (17.49%), and oilseeds covering 11,189.03 hectares (0.64%). Regionally, the SNNP and Oromia regions led in fertilizer-applied areas and overall agricultural participation. Nationally, 12,168,676 holders engaged in Belg production, utilizing improved management practices across 2,290,889 hectares and applying 2,345,435 quintals of commercial fertilizer. The primary driver of crop damage was a shortage of rain, affecting 203,102 hectares (72.34%) of damaged land.
