Ethiopia Socioeconomic Survey (ESS) 2018/19 Report
• The Ethiopia Socioeconomic Survey (ESS) is a collaborative project of the Central
Statistics Agency, Ethiopia (CSA) and the World Bank.
• The project is generously supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
through the Living Standards Measurement Study–Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) project.
• ESS objectives include development of an innovative model for collecting agricultural data, interinstitutional collaboration, and comprehensive analysis of welfare
indicators and socioeconomic characteristics.
• The survey is integrated with the CSA’s Annual Agricultural Sample Survey (AgSS); the
rural households surveyed in the ESS are a subsample of the AgSS sample households.
• ESS 2018/19 (ESS4) is a new panel survey. It covers a nationally representative sample of over 6,700 households living in both rural and urban areas. The sample is
also regionally representative.
• This report describes the results of the fourth survey wave.
