The Statistical Study, Research and Training is one of the core departments of the Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS) under the Statistical System Development and Methodology Division. The CEO is responsible for advancing statistical methodology through research and strengthening institutional capacity through coordinating statistical training. It is established in 2023 following the organizational reform under implementation.


The Dual Objectives of Statistical Study, Research and Training CEO are:


One of its key functions is conducting methodological researches by reviewing the existing methodologies of statistical surveys & censuses and designing and improving new methods such as sampling, stratification, and estimation procedures; Promoting and improving various models and new methodologies such as small area estimation and model based estimation techniques as well as refining the existing ones; Enhancing data quality and standardization of statistical data; exploring alternative data sources including big data, citizen-generated data, and satellite imagery; developing statistical forecasting, projection, and prediction models; and adapting international statistical best practices and emerging technologies to the national context.

The other key function is coordinating various tailored statistical training programs using in-person, e-learning or blended modalities focusing on statistical capacity development and enhancing learning and knowledge sharing culture in the ESS and the National Statistical System (NSS) based on priorities of regular training need assessments. The training courses include but not limited to onboarding courses/induction, technical, methodological and various software skills required from design to dissemination (D to D), Data Science and Modernization, Soft Skills such as leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement. The ESS is envisioned to establish a Center of excellence on Statistical Research and Training.
