Addis Ababa, November 18, 2025 — Africa today marks African Statistics Day 2025, a continent-wide observance dedicated to highlighting the transformative role of data in driving development and strengthening good governance. Celebrated under the theme “Leveraging Data and Statistics Innovations for Equitable, Peaceful, Inclusive, and Prosperous Societies for Africans,” the day calls attention to the growing importance of reliable, modern, and timely statistical systems.
This year’s theme underscores the rising demand for high-quality data as African nations face increasingly complex development challenges. Experts stress that traditional data systems alone are no longer sufficient. Instead, there is an urgent need for modernized, technology-driven statistical systems capable of producing comprehensive and real-time information to support evidence-based decision-making.
In Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Statistics Service (ESS) stands at the forefront of this transformation. Over the past three years, the ESS has undertaken major institutional reforms with a strong emphasis on digital modernization. Through the establishment of a dedicated Statistics Digitalization Department, the institution has been working to integrate advanced technologies into every stage of statistical production—from data collection to processing and dissemination.
The alignment between this year’s continental theme and Ethiopia’s ongoing digital transformation efforts reflects ESS’s firm commitment to innovation. By prioritizing modern digital tools, the ESS continues to strengthen its ability to deliver fast, relevant, and trustworthy data that supports national development priorities and contributes to a more equitable and prosperous Ethiopia.
African Statistics Day 2025 serves as a reminder that data is more than numbers—it is a strategic resource essential for building peaceful, inclusive, and forward-looking societies across the continent.
